Favourite Photo Spots in Stockholm
I dare say I’m fortunate to live in Stockholm — not only from a photographic perspective. The city has a rich history, and buildings dating back as early as the 1100s are still standing today. Some are even in use for restaurants, bars, or conferences. Over the centuries, Stockholm has evolved — especially from the 1950s onwards — and today it’s a fascinating blend of old and modern architecture.
Water surrounds the city, creating a natural frame that’s endlessly photogenic. Stockholm is, as beloved Swedish singer Lasse Berghagen puts it in Stockholm i mitt hjärta, “a mix of sweet and salty” — a reference to where the Baltic Sea merges with Lake Mälaren. Whether you’re a visitor, a local, or a photographer, Stockholm has something for you. And after all, this is a blog about photography.
Now, some might say that a great photographer can take stunning images anywhere, regardless of the location. I can neither confirm nor deny… (classic movie line, I know). 😉 But truthfully, I think your surroundings do shape how you see. Living in an environment that sparks creativity makes a big difference. And for me, Stockholm is that environment.
So, what are my favourite spots to photograph? I have many.
Gamla Stan (Old Town)
A medieval maze of narrow streets and colourful facades in yellow, ochre, and red. The lighting changes constantly here, and no two days feel the same. It’s a place where you can wander for hours, camera in hand, and still discover something new.
Södermalm Ridge to Långholmen
This is more of a scenic stretch than a single spot. I often walk from Ersta Hospital along the ridge toward Slussen, then continue to Långholmen — either along the cliffs or by the water (Söder Mälarstrand). Along the way, you’ll find charming old wooden houses, many of which are culturally protected or highly sought-after. The view from the ridge over Stockholm is breathtaking — especially in summer.
Royal Djurgården
A beautiful island filled with museums, parks, and royal history. Two favourite spots of mine are the area around the Vasa Museum and Prince Eugen’s Waldemarsudde. You can get there by ferry, tram, or by walking along Strandvägen — all picturesque routes worth photographing in their own right.
These are a few of my favourite places to go when I need inspiration or simply want to capture the magic of the city. If you’re visiting Stockholm, I hope they offer you the same sense of wonder and visual delight.
Feel free to reach out and share your favourite spots — I’d love to hear about them.
Until next time!
