My Favourite Photo
Today, I want to take you back in time and tell you about my favourite photo — or more accurately, one of my absolute favourites among several.
I truly believe it’s important to have a photo you’re especially proud of — something that reminds you why you keep doing what you do. Successes, whether small or big, are crucial in any creative pursuit. They’re what keep you going, especially during the times when things don’t go as planned.
Success, after all, is a bit like a rollercoaster. The trick is to stay on the ride — even when it gets rough — and just hang tight, because when you least expect it, the next high point arrives and lifts you beyond what you thought possible.
For me, the photo that still makes me proud — and which hangs framed on my wall — is a sunset with the silhouette of a sailing boat. The colours are orange, yellow, red, and purple. Over the years, I’ve realized that these are the colours I’m most drawn to. I’ve always loved sunsets. I often feel like I want to chase the light — not let the sun fully set, but follow it all the way to the next dawn.
I love light, especially when it’s soft. Soft light can feel both romantic and a little melancholic. The photo I’m talking about captures that feeling so well. It’s as if everything aligned perfectly in that moment to help me take the shot. The timing, the composition, the position of the boat relative to the sun — it all just worked.
I can still recall that July evening in 2010. I was standing on the beach, taking several photos of the same scene. The sunset was truly special. I wanted so badly to capture the light and the atmosphere of that evening. And every time I look at that photo, I’m right back there — smelling the ocean, the summer air, and the scent of wildflowers.
A fun detail — at least to me — is that I always thought I took this photo with my Fujifilm X100. But it turns out I actually captured it with my first camera: the Canon 450D. That makes the image even more meaningful. It reminds me that you don’t need the latest gear or tons of gadgets to take a photo you love. All you need is a bit of perseverance… or, in my case, a lot of luck! 😄
